a green cookie jar

February 23, 2010 •

As a passerby, who can resist piles of cookies clustered in a window?  Definitely a draw for me, I had to see what this bakery had to offer. Upon entering I thought I had gone to heaven, Bird Bath Bakery not only smells divine but I learned they are a Green bakery, using all organic ingredients and their space and supplies are as sustainable as they come. The ultimate test was the tasting and I can assure you no crumbs will remain uneaten. The cookie package below contains an assortment of chocolate chip, all chocolate and oatmeal raisin cookies for $15, perfect as a hostess gift or if you are having company over. I brought a set to a superbowl party and within minutes all the cookies disappeared. Go on and let your inner monster have a treat or TWO.

chalk it up. . .

September 1, 2009 •

any way you like it!   Chalkboard accessories are fun, versatile, typically inexpensive and green! Mistakes can be a thing of the past, organization can be made easy and design can change just as your mood does… daily.  Chalk is popping up all over the place: on packaging, labels, mugs well suited for teacher/writer types, favors, party supplies and home & restaurant decor.  A friend of mine painted her dining room wall with chalkboard paint and every party I attend at her home the wall is always a hit, keeping guests entertained for hours.  Little kids, big kids can all share in this joy, the possibilities for freedom of expression are endless!

lunch has a new love

August 28, 2009 •

Check out these adorable and functional reusable sandwich and snack bags. Loads of cotton patterns to choose from, these saks are lined with a water-resistant, FDA approved, food safe nylon and close with velcro.  An eco-friendly way to tote around your lunch, pack your children’s lunches or carry with you treats for your pet.  Easy to wipe clean and when really dirty they can be thrown in the washing machine. Save money and say goodbye to vending machine woes… these bags are a great reason to tote around healthy snacks. I am not usually one to bring a lunch, but thanks to my friend Renee who gifted me these, I now have no excuse not to.

at the NYC Gift Show…

display

1-3. It is truly amazing what can be done with die-cut paper.  I first saw this company and their amazing light fixtures just a short while ago, I blogged about my findings here.  When I stumbled upon their display at the show I was mesmerized by their ability to mix functionality with artistic expression.  Their light fixtures are absolutely stunning.  See more of their designs at artecnicainc.com 4. Next I came across this fun display from The Sarut Group, who produce bold and colorful novelty gift and home items.  I love this tabletop idea for a children’s center or playroom.  A fun but green way of recycling old unwanted barrels. 5. Lastly, the paper cocktail number.  Every show I head to Rag & Bone, to see what wonderful paper creation Ilira and the R&B team have designed.  A tradition always inspiring and they never cease to impress me with their patterned albums and book binding presentations.

a lil al fresco

August 14, 2009 •

This is the perfect time of year to bring a meal outdoors… whether it be a romantic outing for two, a family style shin dig, or a fun day at the park with friends.  Here are a few great ideas for making your picnic experience a pleasurable one. Get a handle on your wines using a square tablecloth that duel purposes as your sitting blanket.  Make up a batch of memorable totes that guests can use long after the celebration. Cook up a great pasta salad sure to be a crowd favorite, and invest in the best reusable flatware made of organic bamboo.  The ants should be the only ones left off the invitation!

Greek Orzo and Grilled Shrimp Salad with Mustard-Dill Vinaigrette, from the kitchen of Bobby Flay, foodnetwork.com

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 pound orzo, cooked al dente
  • 1 large cucumber, seeded, quartered lengthwise, and sliced
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup olive oil, plus additional for brushing shrimp
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 3/4 pound feta cheese, crumbled
  • 16 medium shrimp, peeled and de-veined

Directions:

Combine orzo, cucumber, green onions, and tomatoes in a large bowl. Place dill, vinegar, and mustard in a blender and blend until smooth. With the motor running, slowly add the olive oil and blend until emulsified. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour the vinaigrette over the orzo mixture and stir well to combine. Gently fold in the feta cheese.

Heat grill to high. Brush shrimp with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill for approximately 2 minutes per side or until just cooked through. Divide orzo salad among 4 take-out containers or plates and top with 4 shrimp. Garnish with additional dill.
